As with all creative work, designing a website cannot be construed as an exact science.
However, if the designer is given a good brief on what is required from the site, the creative content can assist tremendously in the success of the website.
One of the prime considerations that must be borne when planning the site is the fact that a website must sell - philosophies concepts services products no matter what.
This means that there must be a clearly defined and achievable objective or there can be no reason for having a website at all.
There are, we believe, four major reasons for having a website:
- To supply information relating to something the visitor to the site is interested in (The company, a product, a place etc)
- To grow a corporate or brand
- To save costs and improve effectiveness (Placing orders, monitoring meetings, filing of quotations etc)
- To make money (E-Commerce)
Each of the above reasons for a site must be accompanied by specific objectives:
- An information site must include data that the customer will find interesting and useful not just statements to fill cyberspace.
- A catalogue site needs the ability to allow customers to ‘click through’ the information quickly and easily.
- An e-commerce site must give visitors the ability to place orders without difficulty. The most recent trend is to give the purchaser the ability to track the progress of the order. This is especially important on B2B sites where delivery lead times may take weeks or longer.
- A publishing site must allow readers to find and visit specific content quickly.
At this point the designer needs to appreciate the probable time the visitor to the site will spend reading the data available. Experience shows that sites visited for fun reasons (music, games etc) can be drawn out but B2B sites must in general be fast to enter, fast to read and fast to act on. Research has shown that in the latter case a site must open and be ready for interactivity between 3 and 10 seconds.
With the above in mind, Re-al executives believe that each site should receive a balance of the following requirements:
- Content
- Creativity
- Organisation
- Reader friendliness
- Capability (the ability to achieve the objective set for the site before it was prepared)
- Interactivity (the ability to link all parties concerned in achieving the objectives)
- And Speed of operation and interactivity
